The Capstone
A real problem, start to finish
All students complete a capstone project in the last 5.5 months of their program, registering for a total of 12 credits (3 credits in their last term) as IPG 601A and 601B. This capstone project investigates a real problem in geoscience resource assessment or development.
Projects apply the geological, geophysical and reservoir engineering skills built across the core courses to the student’s chosen area of concentration — petroleum, geothermal, carbon sequestration, or minerals in sedimentary basins.
Two Routes
Industry internship, or faculty supervision
Students can complete their capstone projects in conjunction with an industry internship, where the internship project also serves as the capstone project for the IEG program.
Route one
Industry internship
The internship project doubles as the capstone. Students are encouraged to seek internships through their own efforts, and IEG faculty will also endeavour to find internships for students. This route puts students inside a working technical team before they graduate.
Route two
Faculty-supervised project
Students who do not receive internships will be supervised in their capstone project by a University of Alberta faculty member. Supervision is available across all four concentration areas, drawing on the program’s core and affiliated faculty.
